"Afghanistan - Touch Down In Flight" by Lucas & Salome Augustin: The Human Side of Life

All of you, who either know us in person or have regularly followed this blog during its first year online, should be aware by now that "Round Up The Usual Suspects" is nothing but our amateur endeavor to post about anything that strikes us or stands out as genuine and intriguing. Today`s post proudly marks our first "journalistic approach" on a subject that is definitely worth sharing on the net with you all. For us, it all started when our friend Nick K. e-mailed us a one-word-message, "Afghanistan", with a link to a short film.
Ask yourselves what truly comes to mind when you think of Afghanistan: Taliban, war, terrorism, violence, bomb explosions and pictures of military interventionn. As Wikipedia quotes about the country`s recent history: "Three decades of war made Afghanistan one of the world's most dangerous countries, including the largest producer of refugees and asylum seekers", enough years to erase any images of beauty and dignity concerning this country from global memory.
German journalist, photographer and filmmaker Lukas Augustin, who had lived in Kabul from 2006 to 2008, volunteering for a humanitarian aid organisation, returned to Afghanistan in 2011 with his wife, photographer Salome Augustin and together they co-produced a short film entitled "Afghanistan-TouchDown In Flight". This video, just under six minutes in length, left us speechless and stunned by the power and the beauty of the intimate shots of people and landscape, the images of an Afghanistan so peaceful and different from the one shown by the western media, as well as mesmerised by the original soundtrack composed by Lisa-Maria Puy. We were so emotionally charged that we felt compelled to dig a bit deeper and try to find the story of the people behind it.
Their rare talent to see beneath the surface was obvious. Their intention was to capture the beauty and the essence of real-life people in Afghanistan, showing the world "...that there is beauty and life in their country that is worth hoping for and not to give up on the future...", as they stated in an interview for the online edition of The AtlanticMagazine. In the same interview they also explained that: "...Afghanistan for most foreigners appears in disguise. Many westerners portray Afghans either as noble savages or evil terrorists. Why is that? In order to portray Afghanistan beyond the surface, or beyond the limited view we have on this country and its people, you need to build trust, and to get this trust you need to get on eye level with the Afghans and show them respect and sometimes just a few gestures of spending time for a few cups of tea. Learning the language during the first two years I lived there was one of the best investments I could make. It opened many homes for us and helped us to understand the views of the people... Many Afghans are disillusioned about the foreign involvement, some are even afraid to meet foreigners because they can make them become a target for the Taliban. So when we met they were often suspicious at first, but after talking with them in their language, they became much more open. Most of the images, we shot as we came across them, because we want to show pictures out of daily life as it is. We didn't want to use a narrator, instead we sometimes ask the people to look into the camera. We wanted the viewer to feel approached by the direct look but to leave it open to everybody to react on that in his own way...".
This great short film was initially featured in the iPad edition of the Süddeutsche-Zeitung Magazin and the online edition of The Atlantic Magazine and TheWashington Post. It has grown into an enormous internet success, receiving many awards and worldwide media recognition and just recently Salome & Lukas Augustin were nominated for the CNN Journalist Award. The Germany-based filmmaker couple has also founded "Augustin Pictures" production company and has covered stories in Somalia and Congo. Their latest project is "The Hard Places", a documentary about the extraordinary journey of Dr. Tom Little, who was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by U.S.A. President Obama, the highest honor bestowed upon any U.S. citizen. in recognition of his life’s work and sacrifice in Afghanistan.

We found all these so intriguing that we decided to get in touch with Lucas & Salome Augustin, so we emailed them and to our surprise they contacted us from Kabul, Afghanistan, where they are currently shooting their latest documentary and they honoured us with their answers to a couple of our questions, exclusively for "Round Up The Usual Suspects":

Question: We understand that there was enormous feedback and mostly positive reactions. After all this time, do you think that the part of the viewers that were negative about your work are finally convinced that behind this piece of art there was nothing hidden but the best of intentions?
Answer: I think we got very few negative reactions on this piece. Some people for example didn't like the dolly shots but we used it in a way of having this feeling of a flight through Afghanistan. Other people were upset about the verse from Ecclesiastes that we started the film with saying that we shouldn't use a verse from the Bible in a Muslim context. We believe in the common humanity and that all people are created equal and I think we didn't try to divide the world in good and evil but we wanted to show the human side of Afghanistan that is often neglected in the Western media.
Question (for Salome): When you finally visited Afghanistan in person, what you saw there, was it different to what Lukas had told you about this country and its people or had he succeeded in being precise in his narrations?
Answer: I actually arrived a week earlier before Lukas came. I stayed in a very Afghan area and I visited a lot of local families that a friend of Lukas got me in touch with. I think hearing and reading about a place is always different from actually experiencing and seeing it for yourself and going there made my picture of Afghanistan much more complete.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

    Ερώτηση: Αντιλαμβανόμαστε ότι υπάρχει τεράστια ανταπόκριση και ως επί το πλείστον θετικές αντιδράσεις. Μετά από όλο αυτό το διάστημα, πιστεύετε ότι το μέρος των θεατών που στάθηκαν αρνητικά στο έργο σας πείστηκαν τελικά ότι πίσω από αυτό την καλλιτεχνική δημιουργία δεν κρυβόταν τίποτε άλλο παρά οι καλύτερες των προθέσεων;
    Ερώτηση (για τη Salome): όταν επισκέφτηκες τελικά το Αφγανιστάν και εσύ η ίδια, αυτό που είδες εκεί ήταν διαφορετικό από αυτό που ο Lukas σου είχε αναφέρει για αυτή τη χώρα και τους ανθρώπους της ή είχε καταφέρει να είναι ακριβής στις αφηγήσεις του;

  2. This is Nick K. !

Let me begin by saying that I feel happy because I have contributed in my way to your excellent blog. Well done guys!

Regarding the specific video, well, I can only say this: many thoughts but even more emotions.

I’m certain that we all feel the same emotions after watching the video, so let me share just a few of the thoughts:

    - Being an amateur photographer myself, I immediately appreciated the high quality of the film - clarity, focus, angle of shooting, frame, and, most importantly, lighting.

I really don’t understand why some people didn’t like the dolly shots; on the contrary, they show professional shooting.

    - There is beauty all around us.
In every aspect of our lives.
    In every place.
    In all people.

    But

When ugly things are shown constantly, then negative feelings and ideas prevail.

    - Regarding Afghanistan, or any war- (and let me add economy- (!)) stricken country, people know only what they are fed with in the news.

It is unfortunate to associate countries, people or anything for that matter only with what is shown in the mass media.

    - Lukas and Salome Augustin have shown that the power of image, still or moving, can have a strong effect, only this time in a very positive sense.

    - Finally, let me ask a (rhetorical) question:
if you had watched the video without knowing which country it’s showing,
and someone had asked you to guess the country,
    what would you have said?

    Nick K.

  3. The thing about internet is that one can find lots of great stuff out there, as long as one has the desire to do some digging and look beneath the surface and that`s exactly what you guys did: not only did you watch this marvellous video but you also did the research to find Lukas and Salome and introduced them to us.

Congratulations to them for their admirable work and to you for your inspired post.
